'Opto-Micro-Nano Innovative Network Exploiting Transversality'

OMNI-NET focuses on optics and micro/nano electronics (OMN) clusters, relating to IST and NMP technologies.

The most common challenges for technological clusters are convergence and transversality/pervasion. Convergence relates to the combining of technologies from different fields to meet the demand of end markets. Transversality and pervasion relate to these technologies application to a wide range of markets, and include ICT, automotive, aerospace, medical equipment and energy.

OMN clusters are currently isolated within their respective regions and technological sectors. International cooperation among these networks has been limited by lack of means, methodologies and long-term strategies to exchange practice and experience. This is compromising the competitiveness of European industry as today's technologies and scientific knowledge are evolving very rapidly. OMN firms must keep abreast of this evolution and clusters must adapt services and networking to support them.

OMNI-NET intends to take advantage of the opportunities and challenges presented by convergence to enable clusters to adapt, and to construct methodologies that can be shared with new member states and accession countries.

The overarching goal of the OMNI-NET project is to:
Provide EU national and regional stakeholders with analyses, methodologies, best practice, joint projects and policy recommendations to facilitate the necessary evolution of clusters in transverse and convergent technologies.

There are 4 main objectives:
  • To identify and share best cluster practices in convergent technological fields such as OMN.
  • To formulate a basic set of methodologies applicable to these converging fields and disseminate them to other clusters, networks and new member states.
  • To prepare a trans-regional network of clusters (metacluster) in order to identify and prepare strategic projects based on common needs for European cooperation on specific innovation themes.
  • To make policy recommendations to the European Commission and regional policy makers based on the project outcomes.
