Detailed insights into sectoral innovation performance are essential for the development of effective innovation policy at regional, national and European levels. The Sectoral Innovation Watch project will research the factors and institutions impacting on innovation performance, and analyse the framework conditions across 9 selected sectors and 2 horizontal topics: Biotechnology, Food/Drink, Machinery/Equipment, Textile, Chemicals, ICT/Electrical/Optical, Space and Aeronautics, Automotive, Eco-innovation, gazelles (fast growing SMEs). Sectoral Innovation Watch will provide policy-makers and stakeholders with a comprehensive, holistic understanding of sectoral innovation performance and challenges across the EU25.
A fundamental question is to what extent and why innovation performance differs across sectors. By developing new indicators and innovation models at sectoral level, the Sectoral Innovation Watch project goes beyond statistical analysis of cross-sector innovation performance by incorporating qualitative analyses. Key points of focus for these analyses are Policy Mapping, Innovation Performance, Innovation Champions, Innovation Challenges National Sectoral profiles Barriers and Drivers and the Innovation Environment. The project will also integrate innovation panels composed of sectoral innovation specialists. The panels will provide opportunities to discuss preliminary findings and policy recommendations for each sector. More information about the innovation panels can be found by navigating to the "Sectoral Panels" area of this portal.
Sectoral Innovation Watch is a multi-task, multi-purpose project. It aims to identify the sectoral innovation patterns in specific European sectors, highlighting the main policy implications and schemes that should be promoted. It will identify excellent performances at both European and international levels. The results of the project will provide a comprehensive set of factors that lead to success. Sectoral Innovation Watch will act as a "greenhouse" for the development of new indicators and innovation models at sectoral level.
