1st Europe INNOVA Thematic Workshop: Munich took the lead

On 29 - 30 June 2006, Munich hosted the 1st Europe INNOVA Thematic Workshop under the title "Lead Markets and Innovation". The two-day event took place at the premises of the Bavarian State Ministry for Economy, Infrastructure, Traffic and Technology (StMWIVT) and brought together nearly 50 stakeholders and experts in the field from the Europe INNOVA Community, the Bavarian regional authorities, the European Commission and the entrepreneurial world.

The workshop successfully explored the concept of lead markets, as proposed by the Aho Report on creating a market for innovative products and services. Discussions focused on a wide spectrum of issues, such as the requirements for creating new market opportunities based on leading edge technologies, the policy instruments that can be used for this purpose, the responsibility of the market players, the level of state intervention, potential financial implications etc.

The discussions during the two days of the workshop produced a number of ideas and policy recommendations that could be exploited by the Europe INNOVA partners, and the European Commission, for policy formulation. During the two parallel workshop sessions, discussions took place on how to define and further develop the concept of lead markets in the specific fields of Space and Eco-innovation. These two areas were selected because of the radical scaling up of technological and market importance that they have experienced.

An executive summary report synthesising the main conclusions of the discussions has been prepared and can be downloaded together with all the key-note presentations and relevant background information.

At this point many thanks should be attributed to the Department for Innovation, Research & Technology at StMWIVT (headed by Dr. Gerd-Achim Gruppe) and to GruenderRegio M e.V. of the CASTLE Network for their seamless organisation and warm hospitality.
